Cooper MacEwen was sitting in his Grade 8 science class at Summerside Intermediate on Friday afternoon when he heard a thud in opposition to the classroom window.

“All of us appeared over and it was a crow that hit the window,” stated the P.E.I. pupil.

MacEwen determined to look a bit nearer and peeked out the glass.

“We noticed this owl there and, like, 5 crows swarming it,” he stated. “We noticed the owl simply sitting there, not transferring, not flying.”

College students rushed over and began banging on the home windows to get the crows to cease swooping and pecking on the tiny owl.

“[A crow] was making an attempt to seize its wings and head and making an attempt to hurt it,” stated 13-year-old Holden Rush, who can be within the class.

Morgan Sears was instructing the category when it occurred and stated birds typically hit the reflective window in his classroom. He did not suppose a lot of it till college students needed to see what was taking place.

“Anyone who was sitting near the window stated there may be an owl. I stated, ‘Everyone, let’s look.’ Often, yeah, you need them to remain centered on their work, but it surely was form of neat. So everyone went to the home windows.”

Decided to save lots of owl

Sears stated the owl appeared wounded and was solely transferring its head because the crows swarmed it.

“To be sincere, I stated at one level, ‘Let’s simply look away and let nature take its course.’ I am a science instructor, and issues need to die for different issues to dwell. However college students did not suppose that was a good suggestion, so we went down this let’s-save-it route.”

A number of college students went exterior and scared the crows away whereas a faculty workers member got here and gently scooped up the owl.

“We have been all inside watching,” stated Ethan Arsenault, one other pupil within the class. “I hope it recovers and is distributed off.”

A conservation officer got here to the college a couple of half hour after the owl was rescued. Wildlife officers with the province decided it was a juvenile northern saw-whet owl. In response to an announcement from the province on Monday, workers launched the owl once they decided it was OK.

“I hope he has a recent life forward of him,” stated Rush.

Sears stated with owls being nocturnal, he is not certain how this one discovered itself at risk. He stated there are quite a lot of tall timber round and possibly it fell, or crows knocked it from a tree. He stated the scholars co-ordinated the rescue efforts themselves.

“College students appeared up the telephone quantity for conservation [in] P.E.I., different college students who needed to name made the telephone name, different college students went to the workplace. Like, they did the whole lot — I simply form of sat again and managed,” Sears stated.

“All of them have their particular person strengths, there are 15 of them there they usually all performed a task and doubtless saved this owl’s life.”

The kicker right here is that the mascot for Summerside Intermediate is an owl. Its title is Ozzy.

“It form of grew to become a joke after I began speaking to workers about it. I am like, ‘We had our personal … little Ozzy encounter.'”
