As firefighters from the B.C. Wildfire Service continues to combat over 100 active flames to battle over 100 active wildfires throughout the province, the federal government has pledged military MILITARY assistance required to put out the fires.

Canada’s public safety minister stated Friday evening that Ottawa is now coordinating with the British Columbia government to organize military forces to assist where it is required.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said that a base will be established in Edmonton to supply aircraft resources as well as up to 350 military soldiers to assist in the fight against the flames.

“It may be utilized to help evacuations, firemen, and community people if needed,” Sajjan added.

Meanwhile, as hundreds of homeowners in B.C. braced themselves to flee their homes at any moment, the BC Wildfire Service warned that more flames may erupt over the weekend.

According to the BC Wildfire Service’s director of provincial operations, nine active wildfires are now of notice, with the Sparks Lake fire near Kamloops being the most alarming.

The fire, which is roughly 15 kilometers north of Kamloops Lake, is categorized as out of control and covers 310 square kilometers.

“We witnessed around 12,000 lightning strikes yesterday,” Cliff Chapman said. “A lot of the lightning strikes happened near towns.”

Because the tragedy in Lytton, B.C., is so vivid in their minds, several individuals claimed they were already planning to leave before the evacuation order was issued.
